History and Success

Under the direction of Iain MacLeod, I am excited to say we are creating an interpretive sign to introduce the story of St. Georges. Iain has been working with the History Committee on writing, collecting images, and identifying individuals with a longtime history with the club. This exciting project will produce assets not only for use on the panel but also for social media campaigns, funding grants, and the website. Thanks also to Mike HingstonMarg MoodyAnne MatthewsPaddy Power, and David Piers, and a special thanks to Councilor Sam Austin for his financial support.

I said it before and will repeat it. Thanks, Tennis Nova Scotia, for assisting us in finding coach Roger Cochrane. Kurt Kamperman is focused on the broader tennis community. An example of objectives at work is working with us to ensure St. Georges had a great coach. This year, we had great difficulty finding a coach. In part due to the success of the ATC. Peter Conlon and Jill Robertson spent two months searching, and it looked many prospects were headed to ATC. While Roger would have been very happy at the ATC, Kurt felt it would be good for us to have a coach of his calibre, and we are grateful Roger accepted. Later this year, you will witness numerous Try Tennis programs initiated by Tennis Nova Scotia as they try to gain a following for playing tennis province-wide.

As a world-class tennis professional, Roger Cochrane is working with us to introduce tennis coaching best practices. While we plan to continue with traditions that make St. Georges feel unique to its memberships. We also are exploring new ways to broaden participation and experience in group activities. Pending the Pandemic, keep an eye out for new ways to engage the membership.

We are always grateful to have help. Steve Marquis has a newsletter committee working on stories for the summer. I am looking for help with policy, staff handbooks, and other projects that involve documenting what we do and how we do it. We have a website that needs ongoing updates. Suffice to say, and there is always a role for many of our sub-committees. Are you interested in helping? We have many opportunities for more volunteers: contact me at president@stgeorgestennisclub.com.
