A new season is ready to begin. We are going to make it the best we can!
Well, we are finally here…the beginning of our 2020 tennis season at St. George’s Tennis Club. If you have not yet heard, registration is now open for the season. NEW THIS YEAR, you can register and pay online for your membership. JOIN NOW
We hope to be open for play, weather permitting, sometime during the week of May 25. Donnie and his team are working hard to get us there. Believe it or not, we could be open earlier than last year. Last spring’s wet weather meant we did not open until around May 28/29. (Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it :-). Cross your fingers and let’s hope for the best.
This will be a VERY different year at every tennis club in Nova Scotia and across the country.
Tennis Nova Scotia has worked closely with the province to enable tennis to start now, under the following conditions:
Prior to Play:
• Please arrive at the courts no more than 5 minutes before play
While Playing:
• SINGLES PLAY ONLY – until further notice
• Remain at least 2 meters apart within social distancing guidelines. Do not make any physical contact with your opponent
• Each player (singles) must bring their own can of balls to be marked and not picked up by their opponent. Balls can be distinguished by number, color (bingo marker) or ball manufacturer.
• When changing ends, move in a clockwise manner as to not pass by your opponent
After Play:
• Leave the premises immediately after play
• Clubhouses will not be accessible by members
• No social gatherings will take place before/following play
As a member of the tennis community please adhere to the above recommendations in making our sport safe during this initial phase of the reopen plan.
Our washrooms will be available for use by members playing tennis, but the clubhose will not be available for any purpose.
St. George’s is a social club. Many enjoy the chance to hang out, play with lot’s of different people, attend socials and enjoy each others tennis play and company. While this year will be different from years prior, we offer an opportunity to play tennis, in a wonderful setting, get some exercise and spend some time with friend’s and family (respecting physical distance :-).
We realize the lack of doubles will not be positive for many. Keep in mind, you can come to hit balls, two people on a court, get a great workout, enjoy the company of your playing partner and enjoy some quality time outdoors. You may be surprised what 1 hour of hitting balls, one per side can do to improve your fitness and your tennis game.
We hope doubles will be allowed very soon. In many respects, our sport is very lucky….tennis enables a relatively safe sporting and exercise opportunity during these challenging times.
To facilitate play this year we are introducing ONLINE COURT BOOKINGS. We should have the court booking system in place soon. Once the booking system is ready and once you sign up and pay your registration, you will be given access to the online booking system. We are working to enable other ways to book a court, but the easiest way to see available times and book a time to play will be ONLINE. Stay tuned for more information.
We know you have been patient so far and we are asking for everyone’s patience as we kick off our new season with so many new things we have not needed to do before. We especially ask for your patience with our club hosts who will be striving to maintain the club, ensure smooth transitions and keep every thing running as smoothly as they can, all while trying to keep their distance and stay safe. Please respect the health and safety of our hosts and all members.
We realize there may be courts available during the day which are not booked online to play. We are asking everyone to please BOOK A COURT ONLINE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE TO PLAY. You will be able to do this online, from your mobile device sitting in your car at the club if you would like. It may take a little getting used to, but it is the best way to ensure the safety of everyone at our club. In the interest of fairness, we will be setting certain rules to guide court bookings. Stay tuned for more information this week.
We are currently not able to offer group tennis lessons. Stefan Hall is back as our club pro and will be offering one-on-one (private) lessons. We will provide more information shortly. We hope to be able to provide junior lessons in some form this summer. We will advise you as soon as we have more information.
Stay tuned for much more information to come. Some of the above may change very quickly as we learn about what works, what is not working and new things we may need to introduce or adjust. We ask for your continued patience.
We hope the virus continues to subside and we wish everyone a wonderful season of tennis.
It will be memorable and one like no other. Let’s make it the best we can.
Please stay safe.
Most of all, THANK YOU for being a member at St. George’s Tennis Club. We appreciate what you bring to our club and to the game of tennis.
