The first lawn tennis court in Canada opens on the archery ground on the west side of the Halifax Public Gardens.

1877
The All England Croquet Club stages the first men’s singles championship at Wimbledon.

1885
Dartmouth’s first club, St. George’s Lawn Tennis Club, builds three grass courts on Canal Street.


1887
Tennis championships at Wimbledon open to women for the first time.
1890 By this time clubs existed in all provinces except for Saskatchewan. 1890 Halifax’s South End
Tennis Club formed on
a leased portion of the
J. S. MacLean property
on Young Avenue. 1890 The Bridgewater Tennis Club opens its grass
tennis courts. 1893 The Sydney Lawn Tennis Club was incorporated by an Act of the Nova Scotia Legislature on 28 April. 1896 Tennis included for the first time in the staging
of the modern Olympics. 1900 St. Georges relocates
from Canal Street to Mott’s Lane, expanding
to five courts. 1902 Cromarty Tennis Club opens, at its present
location, in Sydney, NS 1908 The Waegwoltic Club was founded, originally known as the “Bloomingdale”. 1940–45 St. George’s membership is augmented by members of the British Navy who were stationed in the
area during WWII. 1985 St. George’s Tennis Club celebrates its centenary and publishes a history
of the club, a copy of which is now found in
the Wimbledon library.
